Virginia Time Travelers: Historic Homes Edition
Join us this year for an exciting adventure back in time! Virginia has a wealth of historic homes that have drawn visitors from around the country and even from around the world. These historic homes cover history from pre-Colonial times through the Modern era, telling the stories of major events and people who have left their mark. Become a Historic Homes Time Traveler and walk the halls of these homes that were once inhabited by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, Woodrow Wilson, and many more famous Virginians.
What you have to do:
Download the passport, visit 8 participating homes in Virginia, mail your passport to the Executive Mansion, and you become a Master Traveler. As a Master Traveler, you will get recognized on this website and get a certificate signed by the Governor! You will also be entered into drawings to win great things. See below for details!
History of the Program:
Virginia Time Travelers was developed as a project of the Virginia History Initiative in 1995-a project that would "put Virginia’s history to work for Virginia." The program, administered by the Virginia Association of Museums, used a passport and incentive system to encourage participants to explore Virginia Time Travelers sites. One of its primary goals was to address the "brain shutdown" that so often happens to children in the summer vacation months, and later the education goal expanded to include using the Time Travelers experience to increase Standards of Learning scores as students gain a better understanding of Virginia history, as well as other topics by visiting historic sites around the state. Another major goal of this program has been to increase visitation and visibility for historic home sites and to increase tourism within and to Virginia - at its peak, over 540,000 annual visits to museums and historic sites were directly tied to TimeTravelers.
However, due to funding cuts, the program was discontinued last year. This year, as a part of their 2013 historic homes initiative, Governor and First Lady McDonnell have resurrected the Time Travelers program with a twist to highlight historic homes throughout Virginia. The Virginia Time Travelers: Historic Homes program is an excellent educational tool for Virginia students and adults who often over-look the great treasures these homes have. It is the Governor and First Lady’s hope that this program will continue to receive support from future administrations.
How it works:
Download the PDF of the passport by clicking here and take it with you when you tour historic home sites throughout Virginia between now and December 13th 2013. A list of participating homes is included on this site. At the home, make sure you ask for someone to sign off on the visit! Once you have visited eight historic homes and your passport is filled with stamps, mail it to: Executive Mansion, P.O. Box 1475, Richmond, Virginia 23218.
Once we receive your passport you will become an official Master Traveler and you will be acknowledged as a Master Traveler on the Virginia Historic Homes website! You will also receive a Historic Homes Master Traveler Certificate signed by Governor Bob McDonnell. This will be mailed back to you along with your completed passport.
